Two Occupy updates, same protest, different cities, opposite results…

The Guardian has an update on the case of Scott Olsen, the Iraq war veteran who suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a projectile fired by police during the Occupy Oakland protests Tuesday night via Scott Olsen, Iraq veteran injured at Occupy Oakland, to undergo brain surgery – Boing Boing.
Giles Fraser, a canon at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, has resigned his job and given up his church residence in protest of the plan to forcibly evict the Occupy London protesters camped in St Paul’s Square. via Canon of St Paul’s resigns over plans to evict OccupyLondon – Boing Boing.

One shows humanity and a rational response to the desperation and anger many are feeling at the inequity and corruption around them. One is cowardly, ham handed over reaction leading to violent oppression. Which leader do you admire – the Mayor f Oakland, or the Christian putting his beliefs to work?

Music for free…or death to music downloaders?

Points of view on music downloading can be varied. Here are extremes. I make no comment. Ok, that isn’t me at all. The second one is about a raving looney. I wouldn’t call him a menace to society, i just wouldn’t correct anyone else saying it. This is an ex parrot. (Well,he makes us much sense as one).

Music industry lobbyist calls for death penalty for piracy – Boing Boing.

See that gurney? That is what all you people listening to the latest Lady Gaga song dowloaded illegally deserve, according to this man. Some might argue legally as well, but i think she kind of has her moments. That is digression.

See that image? That is what some very very VERY rich music executive (who one lays *snort* odds on having NEVER having done anything naughty, wrong, or in the slightest bit illegal, unethical, or immoral in his pure sainted life), thinks people deserve. For downloading music.

Dude. Seriously. What is WRONG with you in your ivory tower that you propose this for electrons? A human life is so meaningless to you, in your barren corporate greed?

Umm, with the greatest respect sir, one would like to say that you are a blithering idiot, and the human species is poorer for your very existence.

Searching for Meaning in a Throwaway World

I love the blog written by a  verypurpleperson – and this is reviewing a book with a subject dear to my heart. I haven’t blogged hugely about my quiltingknitting, sewing etc because- well, i haven’t. That may change, my blog is about what is happening when i am in front of the computer right NOW – and often when i am creating, as i was today, i am not necessarily computing. Ok, this varies, as i use mockup tools, and design software like EQuilter 6 (7 on way yay!). Suspect beloved iPad will change things too;)

Yet they are important to me, and Facebook admittedly had a gallery of the collective efforts of my beloved sisters of making, and i. This may – WILL – have to have a new page and life here. The quilts i made for my two youngest, myself (the very first, now the guest quilt here), my father, my beloved ex (no, not that one;) ), the ones i make for friends, the six or seven i have on the go at any point for other offspring, for my new bedroom, for friends – the objects i make as gifts, such as the bags i make, or the things i make from the scraps, the various bits and pieces made –  from clothes to small fripperies, keep me sane. It is a giving of oneself on a deep level, of the thing we all seem poorest of, time. I often recycle material, either as patches, or as .5″ strips for knitting (with or without wool, amazingly lovely possibilities). I LOVE it when people ask me for help in fixing something, or if i could make something. As a collective, three of us have bought much material – but are using every last scrap, all the way down now to the merest strips to fill pet beds to donate to Animal Welfare. One project i love the sound of is memory quilts, when someone dies, clothing and special fabrics of that person’s life are made into a keepsake. I will do that, (but hopefully not for a while, not needed at least) when asked:)

Here is a small project, made collectively over a day, for a magic butterfly girl born a year ago….a play snuggle rug, a small gesture of love in a hurry, as she was…

This is so amazing – technology on a human scale…

Bangladesh’s Infoladies ride from village to village on bicycles, toting netbooks and mobile phones, and set up infobooths where they use net-gathered info to teach hygiene, help with childbirth, assist with crop problems, and so on. There’s an army of them.
