Musings on motherhood.
I took the youngest two and second daughter (ms 17 going on omg 18) + adopted extra daughter to get their general winter we have grown so much clothes – and her formal dress.
Ms 17 etc tends to prefer boy clothes. So i was intrigued to see what would catch her eye. She got a dress that is reminiscent of a grecian style, in black, with some sparkle in places. She is the one that could have been a model — she has that rare subtle beauty that catches the eye, and pulls at the heart. She has a mind of sharpness and brightness, and a presence that sparkles so brightly, or dims the room, depending on mood. She tried on the dress, and oh, there is that moment of exhalation at this beautiful young woman transformed from the sloppy teenager you knew…
My third daughter is nearly 16. She is doign work experience, and she invited me for lunch. I had lunch with my baby at work. She has incredible green eyes, and a pure soul that shines out. She has one of those faces that is so sweet, that you look at her for a while, and it hits you with a jolt that a rare and amazing intelligence is looking back at you, and she is beautiful to look at, and someday, someone will notice it and sweep her away. It is odd to see that in your children, and a source of wonder.
They all do. I remember, as a teen, the moment that i accepted i was not one of the pretty ones – but i was smart, and i preferred that. Somehow, i had five amazing people that are both beautiful and smart – and in multiple ways. Nothing is skin deep with this lot. All so terribly individual, strong characters, and yet warm and vulnerable – there is nothing so scary and painful as the acknowledgement i cannot protect them from the pain they need to find growing up, of love and its sting, of friendship and loss, of life and lessons learnt.
They all have that subtle beauty. It is just, under that, is something even more precious and beautiful – for those who seek.
