Twenty-First Century Stoic — From Zen to Zeno: How I Became a Stoic – Boing Boing

Part 2 is up as well.

So thats what they call it. I have been this for a few years now, and am glad (not surprised) someone else has gone before me. Now i can learn more ways.

Don’t get me wrong. I have bad days (today is one indeed) – my medication caused great physical anxiety, and other symptoms of depression. However, my stoicism allows me to get through it eventually, if not immediately. I recognise the chemical nature of the issue, and can get through it.

It is very similar to mindfulness, which i have also learnt much about, thanks to the generous help of someone, (who i was lucky enough to have as a good friend at the time I was looking for such a method), who is a psychologist.

all hallow’s read

So what is All Hallow’s Read?
All Hallow’s Read is a Hallowe’en tradition. It’s simply that in the week of Hallowe’en, or on the night itself, you give someone a scary book.

I love things like Roald Dahl – and my beloved A Wrinkle in Time is magic and has some distinctly scary bits.

Kids like scary. They are much more grounded in reality and in fantasy than adults. I don’t want to grow up and lose that!

The Tea Party In Their Own Words

TL;DR – too long, didn’t read. Or in this case, watch. This video is 12 whole minutes – that is TOO LONG on the internets, some may bleat.

Stop it. This is real. This is frightening. Listen to the words of the Tea Party, listen to the latent bigotry and sullen discord simmering below the surface of any country facing economic issues, and tell me it can’t happen there. Tell me it will be ok.

I am not so sure.

Don’t tell me this is too long, too passionate, that the “left doesn’t get it”. These are your words, Tea Party. Your seething with hate, violence, injustice, greedy words.

ABC The Drum – The end of journalism as we know it (and other good news)

via abc.net.au

From one of my favourite political journalists, a woman of depth and humour and the speech she gave to a bunch of worrying journalists, faced with the bogeyman of (shudder) new media…:)

A Manifesto! The Time Has Come!

I have made a decision. I will no longer debate the issue of homosexuality in the church with anyone. I will no longer engage the biblical ignorance that emanates from so many right-wing Christians about how the Bible condemns homosexuality, as if that point of view still has any credibility. I will no longer discuss with them or listen to them tell me how homosexuality is “an abomination to God,” about how homosexuality is a “chosen lifestyle,” or about how through prayer and “spiritual counseling” homosexual persons can be “cured.” Those arguments are no longer worthy of my time or energy.

Finally! Someone who takes Gandhi’s (all too often true, sadly), quote:

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ”

And responds with a ringing rebuttal – by his actions. A true Christian. And someone who gives me a little bit of hope…
